The Police was an English rock band formed in London in 1977. The band consisted of Sting, (real name, Gordon Sumner), on lead vocals and bass guitar, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums.

They were one of the most successful bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, known for their hit songs “Roxanne,” “Every Breath You Take,” and “Message in a Bottle.” Their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour, was released in 1978.

The band’s music is a blend of rock, reggae, and punk, and they released five studio albums between 1978 and 1983. They achieved worldwide success and their final studio album, Synchronicity, was released in 1983.

Though they were deemed “the biggest rock band in the world” by many critics at the time, tensions within the band led to them disbanding in 1986. Luckily for their legions of fans they reunited in 2007 for a world tour. 30 years after they had formed.

The band members have all had successful solo careers after the band’s break-up and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. They have won several awards including six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, and many more. Their songs are considered classics of the new wave rock genre.
