Dan Does Police #1: Bed’s Too Big Without You

This has always been my go-to track when trying to illustrate the brilliance of Stewart Copeland. You really gotta hear the live version of this song, where the band gives Stewart a ton of space to really explore that snare-cadence style groove he’s got going on. I can’t really draw many comparisons to the beat of this song…it is in that rock-reggae Copeland signature feel, but it is more up-tempo and sounds like the “and ah” of every measure are being accented on the snare.

For all you over-reactive critics out there, I am not trying to exactly copy how Stewart played this song on Regatta de Blanc. Rather, I am only mimicking his snare work – but using my own ideas and fills to augment the groove, thus creating my own interpretation of the drum accompaniment. While I do feel what I’m playing is the spirit of Stewart’s upbeat and syncopated style, I do recognize it isn’t exactly how Stewart played this song…but that’s OK folks!
