Shai Maestro is an Israeli pianist, composer and arranger. He came into contact with the piano and jazz as a child and studied in Israel and the USA, including at Berklee College of Music. He also studied composition and Indian music, was considered an exceptional talent at an early age and received numerous scholarships. While still in his teens, he joined bassist Avishai Cohen’s trio, which brought him into the premier league of the international jazz world. Together with drummer Mark Guiliana, the trio won numerous awards and was the benchmark for intense, lyrical modern jazz for many years.
Maestro has remained true to the trio format and now also leads his own piano trio, but shines in all playing situations with his pointed and never self-serving virtuosity and his inspired melodic ingenuity. Recordings and collaborations with artists such as Gretchen Parlato, Ben Wendel and Ari Hoenig are testimony to his musical work, as are performances of his cross-genre compositions for orchestra and jazz quartet.
His presence resonates in diverse venues and major jazz festivals worldwide, such as Jarasum Jazz in Korea, Bimhuis or North Sea Jazz in The Netherlands and Winter Jazz in New York City, USA.
