This nweek’s specialo guest is Danuel Sadownick. Daniel Sadownick was born in the South Bronx, New York. He earned his Master’s Degree in Music at New York University as well as studying Drums and Percussion with Andrew Cyrille and the late, great Percussionist Frankie Malabe. After graduating, Mr. Sadownick toured with Lionel Hampton for two years. It was here that Daniel made numerous contacts that led to tours and recordings with jazz icons such as Michael Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Dennis Chambers, Christian McBride, Nat Adderley, Richard Bona and Dianne Reeves.
A versatile percussionist who does not limit himself to one genre, Daniel has spent the last few years also recording and touring with such diverse artists such as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Steely Dan, Josh Groban, Jennifer Lopez, Al Green, Billy Idol, The Roots, Al Jarreau, Maxwell, Angie Stone and Coheed & Cambria.
Daniel has been voted as a “Rising Star” in the Percussion category in Downbeat Magazine for the last eleven years. One of the main reasons for that is the fact that Daniel’s CD “There Will Be A Day” garnered him a SESAC Award for being one of the top ten albums played on USA Jazz radio.
This project of Daniel’s features all original compositions as well as showcasing the utilization of percussion in a variety of contexts. Daniel states that percussion in most music at this present stage seems to be limited to a certain style that does not included all the possibilities of the instruments. “I want to include all my influences when I play music. That runs the gamut from the Art Ensemble of Chicago to Joe Zawinul; from Cannonball Adderley to Frank Zappa. These musicians were torchbearers and pioneers. I hope that my contributions make a statement that is parallel to these exceptional artists. They were consistent in their commitment to bring passion, intensity, and soul to their music.”
Daniel also teaches private students. Daniel states that “living in New York City is a blessing. Being a cultural center, one has access to the many different peoples and music that cover the range of the globe; Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Rock, Fusion, — it’s all here in this beautiful city. I feel lucky to have been born and raised here”.
