“Odd Time Playing and Poly Rhythms” Course available on — Chad Wackerman breaks down a 7/4 rock beat into 4+3 and 3+4 patterns. This lesson is part of our “Odd Time Playing and Poly Rhythms” course, which teaches you how to get started with the essential odd-time rhythms!

This series of lessons teaches you how to get started with the essential odd-time rhythms and then further integrates how to apply polyrhythms using what you’ve learned.

Start your foundation of understanding and playing odd time signatures. Chad Wackerman and Jim Riley introduce how to get started with playing in 7. Learn to play in 5 with Peter Erskine. Once you get comfortable with feeling each rhythm, Terry Bozzio and Efrain Toro share how rhythm is harmonic and the concept of playing 5 & 7 together. This segues into more advanced poly-rhythmic studies with Siemy Di.

A phenomenally skilled jazz and rock drummer, Chad is an authority on the teachings of Murray Spivack [Murray taught Vinnie Colaiuta, David Garibaldi, Louis Belson, Brooks Wackerman and many others.] Chad has amassed a remarkable body of work including a seven-year association with Frank Zappa. Chad’s “rhythm words” can be found on records by James Taylor, Barbara Streisand, Steve Vai, Andy Summers, Men At Work, Ed Mann, Albert Lee, Colin Hay, Dweezil Zappa, Pasqua/Holdsworth/Haslip/Wackerman Group, Terry Bozzio, Carl Verheyen and David Garfield. He is a first-call studio drummer and world-renowned educator, no wonder he is so knowledgeable about modular drumming.
